Cinetopia Film Festival
I was a freelancer who helped redesign the website for a film festival in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. The managers wanted to make the website's design more modern and visually appealing.
I sought to give the existing site a modern overhaul, including a fixed nav bar, full-width divs, and negative space around centered text.
Visit their site here. Made in Mockplus.
Design Goals
-
Consolidate information. There was a lot of information that could be grouped together, making it less overwhelming for the user to search for the data they were looking for.
-
Tell a Story. Modern sites that connect strongly with users tell a sort of story. Users are handed bits and pieces of information and are encouraged to peruse the site even further for more. I also wanted to adapt a format that would cause the user to continue to scroll down, as that is the most natural reaction these days due to the emergence of smartphones.
-
Big, Clear Titles. With so much about the film festival, it was easy to get lost. Something fundamental to include was a big header at the top informing the user where they are exactly, and also providing quick, easy navigation options to streamline their experience.
Major Changes
-
Included a title div with a picture as a background
-
Introduced box divs that take up 100% width, mainly separated by color
-
Type hierarchy. Made titles bigger/bolder, body text smaller and plainer.
-
Less information, more space. Prevents user from being overloaded with data and provides more focus on the essentials.
-
Scrolling for more. I wanted to make the information seem more seamless and organized. The user would have to scroll down the page when reading, which entices them to stay longer.
